Why Gutters Matter on the Carolina Coast

Wilmington averages over 56 inches of rain per year, and coastal storms can dump inches in a single afternoon. Without a properly functioning gutter system, that water goes straight into your foundation, fascia, and landscaping.

Foundation Damage

Uncontrolled runoff erodes soil and saturates the ground around your foundation, leading to cracks and shifting.

Fascia & Soffit Rot

Overflowing gutters trap moisture against wood fascia and soffits, causing rot that spreads into your roof structure.

Mold & Mildew

Standing water and moisture buildup in walls and crawl spaces create conditions for mold growth that threatens air quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gutter installation, maintenance, and our services in the Wilmington area.

Most Wilmington homes benefit from cleaning twice per year, once in late fall and again in spring. If you have significant tree coverage, three cleanings yearly may be needed. Pine needles slip through gutters year-round, so even homes without many trees accumulate debris. Gutter guard systems can reduce cleaning frequency to once yearly or less.

On the coast, aluminum gutters with stainless steel fasteners hold up better than standard hardware. Copper is the most durable option but costs more. Material gauge matters too: thicker aluminum resists salt spray damage longer. We use commercial-grade materials on all coastal jobs because standard residential products fail faster in our salt air environment.

For properties surrounded by trees, yes. Gutter guards typically pay for themselves within two to three years by eliminating the labor cost of frequent cleaning. They're especially valuable in Wilmington where pine needles clog gutters year-round and where salt air makes maintenance work harder. Guards reduce downspout clogs that lead to water backup and fascia damage.

Sagging usually results from water weight accumulation when gutters are clogged or undersized for the roof area. Old hangers lose strength over time, and inadequate hanger spacing (gutters older than 20 years often have wide spacing). Salt air corrosion weakens fasteners. During installation, we space hangers tighter on coastal properties and use stainless steel hardware throughout.

Usually yes. We keep common colors in stock and can special-order matches for most K-style and half-round profiles. For repairs, we'll try to match your existing system. If an exact match isn't available, we'll discuss options. On older homes where the original color is discontinued, we'll recommend the closest modern equivalent.

Small issues like a single leaking joint or loose hanger usually warrant repair. Full replacement makes sense if you have persistent leaks at multiple joints, sagging throughout the system, rust perforation, or gutters older than 20 years. We inspect honestly and explain whether repair or replacement is the best solution.
